Introduce a little culture and color to your kitchen decor with our Vintage Catrina ceramic jars. Each kitchen canister is hand painted with true vibrant colors with the Vintage Posada Catrina in the center. Celebrate Day of the Dead year-round with these unique cookie jars available in three sizes. Each small canister holds up to 6 cups or 48oz.
Our artisans are influenced by the lively colors of Dia de los Muertos when making our ceramic hand-painted treat canisters. Each piece may vary slightly and is fair trade artisan crafted using a two-bake ceramic firing process. The canisters are first baked in a high-fire kiln at 1200-1500 degrees Fahrenheit. The 2nd bake is done at the same heat but will have a protective glaze finish for a true shine of all the colors.
The Inspiration behind this signature design.
The original Catrina artwork that is hand-painted on each canister was adapted from José Guadalupe Posada (the father of the Catrina). ”La Calavera Catrina" was originally sketched in 1888 by one of Mexico’s first & most infamous satirical cartoonist José Guadalupe Posada.
More about the Folk-art hero from Mexico.
Born in a small town located in the state of Aguascalientes, Mexico on February 2, 1852. As a boy Posada was educated by his older brother Cirilo, who was a “campasino” school teacher of sorts. Cirilo taught his younger brother how to read, write, and draw. This small but significant bit of education would prove to be a critical asset to Posada as he matured to become a Mexican political printmaker and engraver. Posada’s work has influenced many Latin American artists and cartoonists because of its satirical acuteness and social engagement. He used skulls, calaveras, and skeletons to make political and cultural critiques.
